Easter for the GFEF Student

Easter has never been a big deal in my family.  It was more a holiday to spend time with family than anything else - except maybe hunting Easter eggs.

Since I started post secondary school I haven’t had a chance to spend Easter with my family.  This year marks the 5th time I will be away from home.  I have had some very different experiences ranging from spending it with a friend’s family to spending the day driving from Toronto to Moncton with an unexpected stop over night in Fredericton.

This weekend I will once again be spending Easter with someone else’s family.  I will be going to New Brunswick for the weekend where I will be with my boyfriend’s family.  I know that I will not be such a weirdo and stick out like a sore thumb.  I won’t have to explain, for the thousandth time, what a gluten-free diet is and why I shouldn’t be eating it.  I won’t have to do any of this because my boyfriend’s brother has to be on a gluten-free diet as well.  And unlike me, he has to completely stick to the diet or he will be sick for days.  Poor guy! But as my sister told me last night when I was complaining about gfef tortillas “Gluten is overrated”.  (I think that’s easier to say when you can eat it whenever you want.)

Let me just get this off my chest - I absolutely positively hate when people make a big deal over what I can eat.  I know everyone is trying to be accommodating and it is sweet of them but I don’t enjoy being the center of attention.  I will always tell people not to worry about me.  I will always find something.

This weekend I won’t have to worry about that.  No one will be accommodating just me.  And it will be the closest I will come to actually spending the holiday with my own family.
